Nicotine

Nicotine is an alkaloid that is most often found in tobacco, but is also in other plants belonging to the nightshade family such as tomatoes, however in much smaller quantities. Nicotine is an addictive drug, and pesticide, but has also been used to increase cognition, alertness, and focus. However over time and can be damaging to one’s body, and decrease energy levels.

Tobacco is used to make cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and extracted nicotine is used to make lozenges, patches, gum, electronic cigarettes and even nicotine water. Many cigarettes are specifically dangerous because they contain high amounts of toxic chemicals on top of the ones contained in tobacco.

Nicotine dependence can cause vasoconstriction, increase in heart rate, and high blood pressure. Smoking increases the chances of cancer throughout the body. It also decreases lung capacity, VO2 max, capillary movement. Blood levels are also deoxygenated. Nicotine is also known to stunt growth, and cause birth defects.
